Only 89 days to go! That’s 12 weeks from next Sunday or 10 weeks plus two weeks taper. April is designated a second bike focus month and I’d like to get up to somewhere between 4 and 5 hours in the saddle which probably means 60-70 miles. The biggest feature of the last couple of weeks was an epic cycle ride out to Eggleston in Teesdale; it was only supposed to be an easy couple of hours but the wind built as I reached Hamsterley and the last hour over the moors was into a gale force westerly with shot-blasting rain and I was barely out of the lowest gear with hill after hill to put behind me before rolling in on nearly 3 hours. My overriding thought turning the pedals was if I can do this I can do Austria. In the same week I edged my swimming up to 100 lengths – or 2500m in 61 minutes. We had a week in Northumberland at the end of March which was a bit of a rest week though I managed 3 runs, 1 bike ride and 2 half-mile swims. The high point was an hours run over a 4 peak ridge in the Cheviot foothills – it was great to be atop the highest of them at 8:13am with no one around. The challenge in April is to push up the distances and get into open water (the wet suit has arrived).
