Things are coming together now - and they need to be with only just over six weeks to go. The main features of the past couple of weeks have been an open water swim and a long bike ride. The open water swim was only 2/3 mile but it was important to get in and test out the wet suit. Ellerton Lake near Richmond in North Yorkshire was good for swimming and just warm enough.
In the week following I had three frustrations; on the bike where my first 10 mile time trial of the year was on the slow side against an easterly head wind for the first 5 miles, a half Ironman swim was a couple of minutes slower than my previous time at 44:20 and a park run 5k was the slowest I’ve done. I needed a boost and an 80 mile bike ride provided an opportunity. My route took me west up Weardale to St. Johns Chapel in the North Pennines then South over the infamous St. Johns Chapel to Langdon Beck road into Teesdale - a stretch which took me the best part of an hour for 5 miles over a steep ascent and descent into a southerly wind. The return was east down Teesdale via Middleton in Teesdale which was a good ride back to Sedgefield taking a flat 2 hours. All together I was out for 6 hours 20 minutes for a good ride. I got further back on track on Sunday 16th May with a half Ironman swim in 42:30. The next few weeks is mainly about sharpening on the bike and in the water while building running miles starting with a run up Snowden on Saturday 20th May.
